Like the Sopwith Camel model, the S.E.5 biplane appeared in the second half of 1916 - when the British army needed a faster and more maneuverable single-seat fighter. Designed entirely at the Royal Aircraft Technique Factory in Farnborrow, it became one of the most popular in production. The Spanish 150-strong eight-cylinder Hispano-Sueza became the main engine. The engine, created by Mark Birkigtom in the Spanish division of the company, was first tested in February 1915. Its value was confirmed by the French government, which took the engine for its fighter.
It was originally intended to install this engine in the enterprise of the Royal Air Force Factory on model B.B.2. However, in the beginning of 1916, the French pilots tried out the new Spad 7C.1 model with this engine, which showed excellent performance - and their British colleagues preferred to improve the previous design. And so the model S.S.5.
The first prototype, designated as A4561, was assembled at the plant in November 1916. He was tested by a veteran of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain, Major Gooddman. It was the first flight of a new fighter. Recovering from admiration in the first minutes after the flight, the major only said - "This is a little devil!" ...
